Organic Pod Vase by MandarinMoon Organic Pod Vase by MandarinMoon
Polymer clay over glass. I made this for my Dad for Father's Day. Of course, here it is Father's Day and I've just finished it...I'm a horrible procrastinator...sigh*
Anyhoo, black and brown Fimo was used. Once cured acrylic and metallic paints were added.
Kinda looks like an alien asteroid doesn't it? LOL
Holes were cut into the clay here and there and, if used as a candleholder, it would allow the light to shine through.

Such a beautiful vase o.o!!  I have no idea where I gonna start when using "Fimo clay" I have such a hard design it probably will look so strange when I try to do this for the first time ever xD.
I was wondering is it even possible to make a vase without a glass holder underneath it?

Thankyou! :)

Thank you! Oh yes, it is possible to make a vase or box completely out of polymer clay. I have never done it myself, but I know it is possible. Good luck!

I've seen it before and it's just awesome! Just a question: can you bake any piece of clay covered glass in the oven? Won't it crack or something?

Thanks for helping me out!

Hmmm...I'm trying to remember if I have ever used any other type of glass besides candle holders (made to withstand heat) and glass gems but I don't think I have. The clay cures at a low temp so I'm guessing there wouldn't be a problem but I can't say for sure. What did you have in mind to use that you are concerned about?

I actually wanted to do some kind of candleholder as well :) I'm just not sure if the glass I bought for it was originally for a candle holder or used for something else. But I guess you're right about the temperature.

Lol.. I'm bad at procrastination also... could it be that artists are daydreamers(we really need to in order to come up with our concepts)
Anyway....I love this piece so much....the organic feel, it makes me think of an asteroid that was actually a life form....(If you knew my comic series you's see why I love this piece)... awesome... :boogie:

I love it!

For some reason this makes me think of dark fairytales- I'm still not sure if it belongs to a fairy or a witch yet...

The nice shine and floral mixed with the rougher, toad-like hide- it's a very good mix!

Is that some kind of special glass for oven?

No but it is a candleholder so maybe it is made to withstand a certain amount of heat. :)

what brand of paints do you use?

I almost responded to your question about paints but I am so inexperienced that I am not sure that what I use is the best but it is Liquitex acrylic paints. I also use Rub-n-buff but it has to be sprayed with a fixative of some sort or it begins to wear off and you have to be careful of the fixative you use so that it does not react with the clay....still working on that one. :)

Funny, I use Liquitex too. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but they never seem opaque enough.

See, one of the things I've been liking a lot about your work is that you're really good at making things look organic--I just looked at the title of this piece after going "wow" at it's toad-hide quality and colors. Beautiful blend of textures and materials, really nice composition. A cool gift for your dad!
