Spill Polymer Clay Mosaic Tile by MandarinMoon Spill Polymer Clay Mosaic Tile by MandarinMoon
I think it may be obvious what influenced me to make this tile....

It is made of polymer clay in shades of gold and marbled brown on a 6" x 6" piece of treated hardboard.

I love working with clay so much! Don't really have as much opportunity to though as I like. That's one of the things I like with clay though the surprise. When it's a good one that's even better. Your pieces are truly beautiful and fun :)

I wish I knew how to do this, but I don't. Where did you learn to do such awesome artwork? I really hope you never stop making these you have an eye for them. I think I would go over the top, but you understand balance. Thanks for sharing your art with the world!

Well, if it was the oil pipe environmental disaster which influenced you, I am glad it had SOME good effect as the tile is wonderful. It actually reminds me of tree bark, and cork. I love how your work is intricate without being overdone - not easy!

Not sure if its what you were going for or not but it seriously looks like Lava when it cools.

Really really nice and also really making me want to try making something like this to try out some techniques on. Do you have any suggestions for someone wanting to do a bit of dabbling Polymer tiles?

Thanks very much! One of the great things about polymer clay is that there is no special equipment to buy so it is perfect for the 'dabbler'. For my tiles, I buy pre-cut treated hardboard...the kind the art store sells. I paint the surface with a white glue and let it dry. This helps the clay to stick to the board. Roll out your clay and spread it over the surface and smooth it down. I usually texture the clay before I add anything. Then, you can add just about anything to your design that will not melt, burn or explode at the low temp the clay cures at. (in your oven)
After the clay is cured and cool I add a wash of acrylic to enhance to texture.
Let me know if you have any questions. :) Have fun!

Ahhh, like a masonite? The hard pressed mdf wood with a smooth white surface on one side?

I've used polymer clays a lot for things such as master pieces to cast but I don't normally use it on its own so this is really helpful.

Not sure when I'll be able to do it time wise but once I get a chance to sit down and try it out I'll share some pictures.

I absolutely love this. Its so powerful, and as simple as it may appear, it speaks volumes on your feelings. I love the glass beads in the middle and the way you were able to process the black Clay to get the rough edges. Great great job.
